Prepping And Staining The Stock:

The stock was sanded down from 80 grit to 150, 220 to 320. Between each sanding, I raised the grain of the wood using rubbing alcohol. This works and dries quickly between each of the grits.  I applied an alcohol stain and wiped it off. Then I applied a second coat of stain and wiped this off. The stock was dried for 12 hours. At this point I used 0000 steel wool to remove any excess stain which may have accumulated on the stock.

With the stain applied, I used linseed oil on my finger tip and worked it into the stock. Using the palm of my hand, I rubbed the oil into the stock till my palm got very hot. I did this to the entire stock,  then let it dry. Each coat took less oil than before and longer to dry.  After the third application of oil, I used 0000 steel wool on the entire stock. This smoothed the stock and polished it at the same time.  Then I applied more coats of oil in repeated applications.
