Toe Plate Made & Installed:
I designed the toe plate to resemble the Isaac Haines with a
couple modifications.
First step was to cut out the plate. Then the edges were filed down to the
lines.
A center line was drawn on the stock and the plate. The plate was aligned
with the line and a 1/16" hole was drilled where the screw will pass thru.
Note, the buttplate was also installed. This was necessary since the plate will
slightly overlap the toe of the buttplate. The
plate was held in position and I drilled a 1/16" hole thru the pilot hole
in the plate into the stock. Then the hole was widened to allow passage of
the screw body thru the plate. The butt plate was removed then the plate was
screwed to the stock. This allowed me to start inletting the plate into
the stock.
Once the plate was inletted, the buttplate was reinstalled. Using a
"SAFE" file, I filed horizontally into the buttplate. The depth into
the buttplate was determined by the length of the toeplate.
(Sorry
about the fuzzy photo - new camera, eh?)
Now the exposed edge of the buttplate was peened over the edge of the
toeplate. When done, using files the edges were reduced to the width of the
stock and the peened area was flattened.
Now the plate is finished.
