Shaping the Forearm and Stock:
So far I have shaped the forearm for the nosecap and along the
length of the forward forearm. Since the Armstrong rifles had a
"V" pattern for the stocks, I measured down 1/3 of the way down from
the top of the stock and then measured 1/2 of the way up. This gave me two
lines. The wood was removed using a spoke shave tool along the upper half
till there was only 1/16" of wood along the barrel and the cut extended
down to the top line. Then a mark was made 1/8" away from the ramrod
channel. All the wood between this line and the 2nd line from the top was
removed. This left a nice "V" shape for the forearm and the nosecap
flowed more smoothly into the contour of the stock.
Now I need to start shaping the lock panel, so the side plate
side can be matched to it. Once this is done, then the belly of the forearm can
be shaped and the trigger guard be installed.
Also, the rear curved tail of the trigger guard aligns up with the front of the
comb of the butt stock.
(Next section will cover the lock panels and the rounding of the forearm
belly.
