Sights were installed next:
The front sight was placed 3/8" back from the muzzle of the barrel.
Lines were marked onto the barrel. Using a hacksaw, I cut down 1/16" into
the barrel on the inside of the lines.
I drew lines horizontally between the cuts on either side of the
barrel. This gave me a depth gauge for the next cuts for proper depth.
Saves me a lot of time so I don't have to keep stopping and measuring my
depths.
Next I cut a series of cuts to these lines.
Using a square or triangle file, I file down the thin strips of metal till I
meet the bottom of the cuts.
Now I flatten the bottom. Using the safe file, I file with the safe side down
and the cutting surface facing the the edge of the slot and file into it. This
cuts a dovetail into the side of my barrel. Once this is done, I trial fit
the sight in the
dovetails occasionally to test fit it. When the sight starts to fit the
dovetail, I stop filing on either end. I find center on the barrel and
mark it for the front and rear of the sight. Then I drive the sight into
position using a brass rod and a hammer.
Once the sight is centered on the barrel and tight. I use a chisel and make
an index mark so if the rifle needs to be properly sighted in, the owner can use
these marks to see how much
they have moved the sights in getting there rifle sighted in.
I placed the rear sight about 10" up the barrel from the breech.
Cut down 1/32" for the length of the sight. (Well a little shy, to allow
for the dovetailing for the sight.)
