Butt Plate Installation:

I used the hand forged butt plate I made. The width of the plate was too wide. I wanted it to be the same width as the top comb of the plate and drew the measurements on the plate and then cut off the excess.  Using a file, I smoothed the edges of the plate.

The draw length for this rifle is 13-1/2". This is measured from the front trigger to the center of the butt plate.

The butt plate is laid down against the stock with the top comb even with the top of the stock. Using a pencil, I drew a line along the underside of the plate. I removed this wood with my bandsaw.

The plate is laid down onto the stock. In this case I wanted to off set the butt plate by 1/8". This allows the rifle to align the eyes with the sights easier.  The bottom of the comb is blackened and the wood removed till there is a continuous line on either side of the comb against the wood.

Now with the top of the butt plate held firmly down, I tap against the upper portion of the butt plate toward the stock. This presses the heel of the plate against the wood.  Remove the plate and remove only the blackened wood. This repeated over and over again till you have a continuous line on either side of the butt plate against the wood. At this stage, I drilled a pilot hole in the top of the comb a 1/3 of the distance from the front face of the butt plate to the heel. I used a 1/16" bit to drill thru the top of the butt plate stopping short of the wood. I poked a 1/16" wire thru the hole to mark the wood. Then I drilled a clearance hole in the comb of the butt plate for the #8 screw. On the stock I drilled a pilot hole 1/16" in front of the mark on the wood. When the screw is tightened down, it will pull the butt plate forward into the stock.

With the butt plate secured to the stock, I removed excess wood from the stock  and started drawing out the cheek piece on the stock. Still a lot of carving yet to do at this point.
