Since the Isaac Haines stock was drying, Brian started working his next project - . He purchased the stock I had repaired in my shop and has already installed the barrel, tang, tang bolt, triggers, and forward thimbles already. He even crafted the side plate today. So far the thimbles , the barrel with tang, lock, lock bolts, double set triggers, and nosecap are installed. Sorry about no photos, we were like two bees buzzing in the hive whilst doing all this. Brian is learning more and more each day. Currently Brian is cleaning up the sand cast triggerguard and the buttplate for installation.
He will create the side plate for installation, too. We will take photos of
the triggerguard installation and the buttplate for you.
Here we decorated up the rear thimble on his rifle.
Next are a series of photos where the butt plate was installed, filed down then we started laying out the triggerguard to be installed. If you have any questions, Brian's email is: murraybd@msn.com
Now we installed the buttplate with screws after it was finally inletted onto
the stock.
Now we were ready to install the toeplate. Here he screws on the toe plate to
the stock after we determined we needed to have a 1/32" overhang on the
stock to meet up with the buttplate which was removed earlier. Now he is deepening the cuts he made earlier when the toeplate was screwed
onto the stock. (Oh, Brian learned a hard lesson today on handling screws after they had been filed down to the surface then removed later. They can be very sharp. You need to note the edges are as sharp as razor blades. Use a wire wheel to burnish the edges before handling them by the edges.)
Here we aligned up the tab on the triggerguard. Figured it was about 1/4" too long so he cut off the excess. Then the stock was marked where the tabs will enter the stock.
Brian has drilled out the slots for the tabs and is now removing the wood.
When the tabs were inletted, then he started inletting the triggerguard into the
stock.
Triggerguard is now installed.
Now proceeded to make it "Tool
Day". Brian had a lot of files with no handles so we made handles.
I'll put this in the Tips & Aids section,
titled "Making File Handles". Brian
started to shape the comb area on the buttstock.
Then he continued working on the stock to
lower the edges. Brian used the 3 - 5 -
7 process of drawing lines
Brian worked on the rest of the stock to
further refine the shape of his rifle.
